Under inspiration of the Spirit, the apostle Paul repeatedly wrote that all things were lawful for him:
1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Does this emphatic apostolic teaching in a NT Epistle prove that all things are indeed lawful for believers?
Comparing Scripture with Scripture answers this question decisively:
2 Corinthians 12:4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
The Spirit has made known here that it was not true that all things in an all-encompassing, exhaustive sense were lawful for Paul—it was not lawful for him to speak certain words that he had heard in heaven.
Application
Scripture reveals to us that there are words that are spoken in heaven that are not lawful for humans to speak. Satan and his demons are heavenly beings who have knowledge of such words and can reveal them to sinful humans who participate in occult activities that put them into contact with demons.
Through participation in such occult sinful activities, humans on the earth can speak unlawful words—words that no believer can lawfully speak. It is not true therefore that all things no matter what they might be are lawful for believers.
Consecrated believers must not have anything to do with all such “unfruitful works of darkness” (Eph. 5:11)!
