I posted the following thoughts online today:
“To resolve the issues about what we should believe about authentic encounters between humans and demons, we have to establish the right biblical baseline for a correct understanding. Genesis 3 provides that baseline:
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
The serpent initiated the encounter.
The human was not involved in any kind of wrong activity when the serpent did so.
Eve had a genuine encounter with either the devil himself or a demonic agent of the devil. She did not initiate that encounter in any way. She was not doing anything evil or wrong in any way when she had that encounter.
There isn’t anything in the rest of Scripture that shows us that demons are any less interested in or any less capable of attacking humans through authentic human-demon encounters in our day regardless of whether the humans are seeking such encounters or not.
Because that is true, it is right and fitting that we hold that evil humans in our day who engage in occult activities for the purpose of having contact and encounters with demons certainly can and do have authentic encounters with them.”
