Why Are Most Churches Today Not Singing the Psalms?

March 24, 2012

From my intensive study of the book of Psalms this year, I am convinced that all churches should sing through all the Psalms in some manner on a regular basis. Most churches today, however, are not singing the Psalms much at all these days.

I’m interested in learning why this is so and would welcome any thoughts that anyone has about this matter.

  1. I think most Churches don’t sing the Psalms because of not knowing they should sing it and also not knowing what music should be used to accompany the verses.

    • I think that you are right on both points, Kojo. With what Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16, and James 5:13 teach us, I think that there is plenty to tell us that we should be singing the Psalms. Concerning not knowing what music to use for accompaniment, I think we should get busy and write singable versions of all the Psalms for use in our churches. I have been working on two of those in recent days. Thanks.
